MASTERS COLLECTION 2024

imposter: extensions of self

‘Imposter: Extensions of self’, is about the connections between mind, body and space. In this collection emily rose explores the concept of imposter phenomena and how fashion can be used as a tool to mould self-confidence and ‘own the room’.

Inspired by personal experience of religious head coverings, this collection uncovers Luton’s

deep-rooted hat making history and its dwindling current day industry. The traditional craft of hat making has been preserved for over 200 years but is now on the UK Red List of Endangered Crafts.

emily rose places a high value on craftsmanship. This collection explores the re-invention and integration of traditional hat making techniques within the context of contemporary womenswear garments. Sponsored by Luton-based hat makers Ken Peirson and Son, emily rose re-invents two millinery techniques - the method of adding brim wire, and the traditional ‘blocking’ method of shaping a hat using heat and steam.

These ‘hats for the body’ mould a distinctive presence for the wearer, and shine a new spotlight on the endangered craft of hat making.
